Read Receipt Does Not Work

Please tell me why I am unable to receive my daughter’s read receipt notification when she reads my text messages? I have read receipt selected on her phone and I’ve sent messages to her phone while her phone was in my possession and it doesn’t work. I have the latest software update and so does she. My phone is an iphone 14 Max Pro and my daughter’s phone is an iphone mini 12. This feature stopped working before I upgraded our phones a couple of weeks ago and I figured maybe there was a glitch but with our recent upgrade this feature would work but it doesn’t. Can someone please assist with this inquiry?

There could be a few reasons why read receipts might work intermittently, even if you have enabled the "Send Read Receipts" feature. Here are a few possible explanations:


  1. The read receipts feature depends on both the sender and recipient settings. Even if you have enabled read receipts on your end, the recipient may have disabled them. In such cases, you won't receive read receipts for your messages.
  2. Read receipts may work differently across various messaging platforms SMS/MMS/iMessage.
  3. Intermittent network connectivity or server problems can sometimes prevent read receipts from being sent or received properly. If there are disruptions in the communication channel, the delivery of read receipts can be affected.
  4. In some cases, read receipts may not be delivered immediately. It could take some time before the system acknowledges the message as "read" and sends the corresponding receipt. Therefore, delays or lag in the system could cause intermittent behavior.

iMessage : Read receipts only apply to iMessage conversations when it is enabled or disabled in your settings.

SMS: For regular SMS this be overridden by your Carrier.


Make sure the messages you're sending and receiving are within the iMessage platform.


SMS Read receipts will depend on three things.

  • Carrier's feature capability for Read Receipts
  • Carrier's traffic to handle (You will notice that all the SMSs do not have Read receipts in the pic below)
