Mac Studio m1 max usb-Ports

The following question to the technical experts:

the mac studio m1 max has two usb-c ports on the front according to usb 3.1 gen 2.

if i now connect a camera whose usb-c output has usb 3.1 gen 1, it is not recognised.

However, if I connect it to the back, i.e. to a TB4 port, it works.

Does this mean that the 3.1 gen 2 ports are not compatible with usb 3.1 gen 1, but the TB 4 ports are?

maybe someone can enlighten me

The CABLES required for USB 3.1 at 10 G bits/sec speeds should be clearly marked with USB trademark, SuperSpeed+, and be SHORTER than 1 meter.

Cables:

USB 3.1 cables are considered full-featured USB-C cables. They are electronically marked cables that contain a chip with an ID function based on the configuration channel and vendor-defined messages (VDM) from the USB Power Delivery 2.0 specification. Cable length should be ≤2 m for Gen 1 or ≤1 m for Gen 2.

The OP said they were trying to connect a camera that had a USB-C (USB 3.1 Gen 1) port. It couldn't hurt to try a cable rated for USB-C (USB 3.1 Gen 2) – but USB 3.1 Gen 1 is "up to 5 Gbps" (USB 3.0) speed.

If it’s the same cable used front and back, then the cable appears fine.

Which implies either the host port or the camera is having issues.

Update macOS to the most current, and check for camera firmware updates and apply the most current.

If all is current, I’d then contact the camera vendor, ask if they’re aware of a more general issue.
