Why is the volume button order reversed in landscape mode and why is the option to change it not available on the newer iPad model?

So I like to have my volume buttons be "button toward the top raises the volume, button towards the bottom lowers the volume". This is inverted on my new iPad. Which physical button controls which direction changes dynamically, which means The Same Action Gives Different Results and the inconsistency is incredibly frustrating. There was an option within the settings on the old one to swap the buttons, but it is not available on the new one. Why?

I just got my ipad Air M2 and the issue with volume button is still there. When I reported to the Apple the answer was that the way the design is.

Dynamic volume controls were introduced with release of iPadOS 15.4 onwards. The “logic” behind dynamic volume controls is such that regardless of the screen orientation, the relative function remains constant - as follows:

  • When the physical buttons are positioned on a vertical edge of the iPad, the uppermost button will always increase the volume. Conversely, lower button will decrease the volume.

  • When the physical buttons are positioned on a horizontal edge of then iPad, the button on the right will increase the volume - while the button on the left will decrease the volume.

For reasons known only to Apple, the ability to disable this feature is not available for any new models of iPad and iPad Pro that have since been launched - these models being:

  • iPad Air5
  • iPad mini6
  • fourth generation iPad Pro 11”
  • sixth generation iPad Pro 12.9”
  • iPad10

This is documented within this recently updated Apple Support document:

If you look at the link provided you will see that the proper diagram representing iPads with the buttons on the edge you expect (the long edge) as well. So the assumption would be that the diagrams above aren’t wrong but are for iPad models that may have the buttons as shown. The info though is still relevant as the orientation and the way the volume buttons will work still apply even for the buttons on the long side.

It’s NOT logical to reverse basic controls that have worked the same way for 15 years. In the Air Force they had a saying. Familiarity breeds success. That means if it isn’t a problem DON’T CHANGE IT! WHAT IF your car suddenly started steering left for right. This generation of people has a LOT to learn from the past. A paratrooper was killed when he was sick and missed a prejump briefing. They changed sides from right to left with the rip cord. He dug THROUGH the chute bad and INTO HIS RIBS. YEAH it’s THAT important. Imagine someone driving and gets a call and turns the volume down. Deaths will result from this. Way to go Apple

Did no one notice that these iPad diagrams show the buttons on the wrong edge?!
The volume buttons are on the LONG edge of iPads.

That's true to a point... 🙂

Apple's general documentation does not, at this time, show the specific button layout for every conceivable iPad model manufactured to date.

The diagrams are illustrative - not literal - the button layout as shown being entirely correct for some models of iPad. However, the described concept of how the buttons dynamically behave, in various iPad orientations, is a constant between models where this feature is active.
