Animoji and Memoji won’t work on FaceTime anymore

These used to work and they are my niece’s favorite to play with on FaceTimes (or in text). But now I can’t ever choose anything. The menu is there but when I tap on a choice nothing happens. Please help!

We'd like to help by ruling out some possible causes, along with learning more about what's happening:

You mentioned there were no issues with both Animoji and Memoji in the past, but when did this start to occur on your iPhone?
Sometimes unexpected behavior can be resolved with a restart: Restart your iPhone
Since you have a compatible iPhone model, the latest version is iOS 16.5.1. You can verify this within Settings > General > About. In case you needed it, this link shows how to first back up, then update: Update your iPhone or iPad
