My iPad Air 4 was updated iPadOS 16.5.1 this week, and since then the lock / unlock feature does not work when my cover is closed or opened. I’ve been using this cover since I purchased my iPad and the magnet does engage when it is closed.
I’ve tried turning off both auto lock and the lock / unlock, shutting down, then restarting, then reenabling the features…. The auto lock works, but the lock / unlock does not.

Thank you for participating in the Apple Support Communities. We understand the Lock / Unlock feature isn't working since updating to iPadOS 16.5.1. It sounds like you've done some good troubleshooting so far. Restarting the iPad and toggling the option in Settings > Display & Brightness > Lock / Unlock were good steps. You may want to completely remove the cover and then restart your iPad and put the cover back on to see if the issue persists.
