Lagging MacBook Pro M2 Max... this shouldn't be happening, right?

My husband is a professional videographer, and recently upgraded his 2019 MacBook Pro to the brand new M2 Max. He made the switch because he has to use high quality footage (normally 4k) and the lagging of the Intel chip/older model made work pretty much impossible.

In the last couple of weeks, the new M2 Max model has begun to lag during editing (he uses DaVinci Resolve Studio) almost as badly as the old 2019 MacBook Pro. So, work is once again almost impossible. Theoretically, this shouldn't be happening, right? This model has been bragged about A LOT because of its ability to multitask and process high demands with efficiency and speed. Basically the creator's dream. We've seen people use it for 12K footage before it begins to lag. So, 4k should be no problem. It is brand new and pretty much as maxed out as it gets!

As far as storage goes, he still has about 900 GB of the 999 total GB available, so it isn't a storage issue. Any thoughts as to why this lagging is occurring? It worked fine for the first couple of weeks that we had it, and is only just now posing an issue (nothing has changed in workflow or usage between now and then). He has noticed the lag both during charging and when the computer is running on battery, and although he normally has the laptop connected to a larger monitor, the lag occurs even when he uses the laptop by itself.

Would love some suggestions on how to fix this!

Thanks so much!

By far the easiest way to cause poor performance, instability, and crashing is to install ANY third-party speeder-uppers, Cleaners, Optimizers, or Virus scanners. or a VPN that you installed yourself.

The idea that a third party, with no special knowledge of the inner workings of MacOS, can somehow find a simple way to protect your computer — that is not already being done by MacOS itself — suggests that the MacOS developers are somehow "holding out on you". That is absurd.

You should remove any and all (other than Apple built-in) virus scanners, speeder uppers, optimizers, cleaners, App deleters or VPN packages you installed yourself, or anything of that ilk.

Third-party file Sync-ers such as DropBox, BackBlaze, OneDrive, or GoogleDrive can ruin performance, but are not inherently dangerous.

Hey auburn24,

We'd be happy to help or at least point you in the best direction for support. If you feel like you're not getting the performance you'd expect while using DaVinci Resolve Studio for Mac, use Activity Monitor to confirm where the performance issues are coming from: View CPU activity in Activity Monitor on Mac - Apple Support

If the issue is isolated to just while processing 4K video in this app, you should work with the app developer for support on the matter from here. For help reaching them, visit: Support Center | BlackMagic Design

Take care!

Hello UTBadger

I have the same issue.

DaVinci Resolve works properly with other 4k frame rates like 50 fps or 25 fps.

My Macbook pro have issue to play the raw footage with both quick time player or other palyers.

So when it can’t play the raw footage, DaVinci can’t play, too!

I should noticed that I didn’t have this issue when I start using macbook since 2 weeks ago!

Thank u in advance for ur kind attention.
