Ios 14 or greater on Ipad Mini A1489

I've pulled out my old ipad mini and am hoping to upgrade the ios so i can actually use youtube. which is an essential application.

from light research it appears this is not possible and the only solution i have is to buy a "newer device"

well im in a quite a tough financial position. if this is the only solution then apple has failed me.

if there's another soltution i would be very grateful if not i should be refunded the total ammount i paid for it many years ago as far as i'm concerned. i should be able to use the same applications as i did back then regardless of how technology has progressed.

SO can anyone help me?

i would be so so grateful for any assistance.

Please excuse any hint of frustration or anger in this text.

I've just got alot going on right now and i'd really like to use my ipad.

Kind regards

Michael Johnson X

As described, you have an iPad mini2.

The first generation iPad Air, iPad mini2 and mini3 can only be updated to iOS 12.5.7.

Apple ended major update support for these models of iPad in September 2019 - although they continue to receive occasional “point” security updates, the most recent being released January 2023. These devices cannot be updated to iPadOS 13 (or any later major versions of iPadOS) as the internal hardware does not meet the minimum technical requirements (CPU capabilities and available RAM) for newer versions of iOS/iPadOS.

Some App developers have dropped support for iOS versions preceding iOS 13.x for technical reasons (often because APIs or software libraries upon which they rely have been updated in the new version of iPadOS, making their App incompatible with earlier versions).

You perhaps need to understand that all computers, regardless of manufacturer, eventually reach a point where they lack sufficient capability or system resources to be able to run more modern versions of its Operating System. App Developers, who need to make a living, eventually stop supporting obsolete hardware - and move on to more recent devices and versions of the host OS. Older OS versions no longer benefit from essential security updates; as bad actors find increasingly devious methods to compromise older unsupported devices and software, these older devices become increasingly unsafe to use - in particular for accessing and processing financial and personally sensitive information.

Whilst many App titles remain compatible with your iPad, if you want or need to access to Apps requiring the most recent versions of iOS, you’ll need to consider replacement of your iPad with a newer or current model that supports iPadOS16.

Of current models, even the entry-level iPad9 has specifications and capabilities that will massively outperform your current iPad, fully supports iPadOS16 - and is compatible with the vast majority of current Apps. Other models are more powerful still.

Whether or not you are able to update any iPad to a newer version of iOS/iPadOS is dictated by the iPad model and the currently installed version of iOS. You can find this information here:

Settings > General > About

For information, here is a list of the highest version of iOS supported by the older models of iPad (for simplicity - “generations” are shortened to a number) that are restricted in their ability to be updated:

32-bit devices (obsolete system architecture)

iPad1 - iOS 5.1.1

iPad2, iPad3 and iPad mini1 - iOS 9.3.5 (WiFi Only models), iOS 9.3.6 (WiFi & Cellular)

iPad4 - iOS 10.3.3 (WiFi Only), iOS 10.3.4 (WiFi & Cellular)

64-bit devices

iPad Air1, iPad mini2 and iPad mini3 - iOS 12.5.7

iPad Air2, iPad mini4 - iPadOS 15.7.6

Newer models are all able to be updated to the current version, iPadOS 16.5

  • iPad Pro (all models)
  • iPad Air (3rd generation and later)
  • iPad (5th generation and later)
  • iPad mini (5th generation and later)

iPad Mini 2 - Wikipedia

end of the line is Last: iOS 12.5.7

there is no way around that

it's the choice of the app developers which versions they wish to support you can take it up with google

How to contact an app developer - Apple Support

other than that you can try using youtube in webbrowsers and if it does not work in safari you can try other webbrowsers from app store that support your ipads ios version
