I have the latest version of FCPX and up to date Mac. I have tried to open a library that was updated on a Mac Mini on a MacBookPro and I get this message.
"The operation couldn't be completed. One or more of the libraries were created with a newer version of Final Cut Pro. These libraries will be ignored."

Regarding the message, there have been occasions when people have been on the latest version and still got that message for some unknown reason. It has happened to me some years ago.
The message is self explanatory.
The version in the MacBook Pro is older.
Tell us the version of the OS and FCP. If you don’t see an update for FCP maybe it’s because you have the last version for that OS.
If in doubt: from the Apple menu, choose About this Mac. Post a screenshot, not including the serial number. This will tell us the mac model and OS version, and we will be able to know if it can be upgraded to a newer OS.
For FCP, start the application and choose Final Cut Pro _>About Final Cut Pro
The latest version of FCP is 10.6.6
Before you download it, copy your existing version to the desktop.
This is because some people have had problems with 10.6.6, so if it happens to you there will be a copy of 10.6.5 you can go back to.
Before updating FCP I always rename the current FCP to something like Final Cut Pro-10.6.5.app, make a zip file (right-click on it and select Compress) and just leave it in the Applications folder. It gets backed up by TimeMachine.

For some reason, the app store wasn't giving me an update version. I have backed up the previous version like you suggested.
You should always keep a backup version whenever you update in case there are any new bugs. You don't have to keep it on the desktop of course, it can be on an external drive or wherever you want.
Help...library won't open.
