I believe albums do not contain the photos - just pointers to them.
My wife has our trip photos on her ipad mini. I want to transfer - airdrop all them to my ipad mini and create an album.
Can I just transfer the album back to her ipad? We use different apple IDs.Will doing this create duplicate photos on her ipad?

That's correct. The albums only contain pointers to the photos. They are not duplicated.

Why not have her create a shared album? You can save the photos from the album to your iPad
