Apple TV - Download additional languages is Greyed Out

Hi,

Working on Macbook Pro 2020, MacOS Ventura 13.3.1

Apple ID is based in South Africa.

I want to add additional languages to download in Apple TV. However the + button is greyed out. It only allows me to have the system/original Audio Language.

How do I enable this feature, or at least just add one more language (German).

Thanks!

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 13.3

You need to turn the "Download Option" off of "Most Compatible" to "High Quality" or "Fast Downloads".

Hey there ryanhardt,

Thanks so much for using Apple Support Communities.

We want to help you figure out what might be going on with your Apple TV and why you aren't able to add a language in Settings. Whenever we're troubleshooting these types of unexpected issues on Apple TV, we have a couple of basic troubleshooting steps that are best to start with. They are great starting steps because they often resolve unexpected issues and set a good foundation for troubleshooting further if need be.

Our recommendation is to start with the steps below and test the issue after each one to see if you have any luck adding a language:

  1. Restart Apple TV - Apple Support
  2. Update your Apple TV - Apple Support

We hope this does the trick for you!

Cheers.

Hello ryanhardt,

Thanks for clarifying this was on your MacBook and for taking those steps on that device. To continue, we want to provide this article that details the steps to take to add a language: Set audio languages for downloaded items - Apple Support. You would follow this guidance:

      1. "In the Apple TV app  on your Mac, choose TV > Settings, then click Playback.
      2. Click  at the bottom of the Download Audio Languages list.
      3. Select a preferred language to add from the list, or search for a language using the Search field, then select the search result.
      4. Click Add.
      5. When you’re finished, click OK.

To remove a language from the list, select it and click ."

If those are the steps you are taking, let's continue looking into this. Are you able to boot your computer into safe mode? When you do this, you’ll see some unusual behavior from the display; this is to be expected. Booting into safe mode will disable any startup and login items from automatically opening, which can help us to isolate the source of the issue further. Please follow the steps in this article: How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support.

Please test that out for us and let us know if the behavior is present in safe mode also. We hope this helps. Take care.

Thank you nathan430

Just for clarity - this is the Apple TV/Apple TV+ app on my MacBook Pro.

I did those two things, but with no effect. The "download addition languages" is still greyed out.

Kindly advise any other solutions.

Also note, I am registered in South Africa with English as the main language. Could it be that Apple is limiting South Africa for some reason?

Best,

Ryanhardt
