Deposit refund

I made a deposit for a car rental on November 02, 2021 I paid the deposit through my card apple pay. After I returned the car, they told me they will refund the deposit to my card. Unfortunately, I did not receive the deposit and when I contacted them few weeks later. They told me that I have to dispute the transaction because the card number in the receipt is different than my card number that I paid with. How I can dispute the transaction????

The card transaction in my apple wallet only show the last week transaction.

The explanation is simple and the rental agency should have known.

Cards today have multiple numbers. The physical card uses one account number when you swipe or use chip. The second number is your Apple Pay number and third number is the virtual card number, if it offers that feature.

Federal banking regulations mandate that credit card receipts display on last 4 digits of the number used for the transaction. Apple Wallet app displays the last 4 digits of Apple Pay number.

Your physical card will display the number used for swiping and inserting chips. Your bank app displays the virtual card number.
