I connected my airpod max headphones to my Windows computer via bluetooth, and the sound quality is absolutely terrible as well as the quality of my microphone. I’ve tried to update the drivers on the computer as well as switching from Hands Free to Stereo, but this only worsens or does not solve the issue. Please let me know if anyone else has experienced this and has a solution.

In case you never got an actual answer, make sure that the audio output is indeed set to your headphones, but the audio input is not being taken from them. Use your laptop microphone or whatever else you have available, but do not set the AirPods Max to being both the audio input and output at the same time. Same thing actually happens on Mac, too, believe it or not. Really strange.

Contact Microsoft:
Seems you need to troubleshooting audio setting in Windows. So, contact Microsoft, requesting assistance, as they are the Developers of Windows. Start Here: Microsoft Contact Us Virtual Agent - Microsoft Support. Perform a chat session with Microsoft using a computer, as it would be more user-friendly doing so. You may need to use a new license key, if this install has become corrupt.
Hi I made an account just to answer this because it appears no one has given a straight answer. Go into devices and device manager and under audio input disable Airpod Max as a “headset.” This should fix your issue. If it doesn’t find some other place in device manager where it says the AirPod Maxes are a microphone and disable it.
