unknown airtag warning - under what circumstances will it show?

I asked a staff member at an apple store and could not get a definitive answer to this basic question: under exactly what circumstances will an ios device not paired with a specific airtag show a warning that this particular airtag is present?

So I set one airtag up connected to my iphone, and placed the airtag in a non-metallic briefcase. The 4 people including myself all with iphones (and ipads) turned on along with the briefcase sat inside a passenger car and travelled for >10 hours and not once did any of the other unpaired devices show any notification that an unknown airtag was present.

The staff at the apple store thinks that the paired phone must be at least 33 feet away for other ios devices to show such notification. I have yet to do that experiment. But is there documentation somewhere that actually shows how it is supposed to work? Thanks

Addition: I used the Identify Found Item feature from Find My app on someone else's iphone and placed that iphone directly over top of the airtag paired to my phone. That's the instruction given on the screen. But that phone could not see this airtag at all even after trying 3 times over 5 minutes. I've also just done the same test with an ipad which also could not find this airtag. And all this time my own iphone was turned off & >30ft away and neither devices automatically showed notification that an unknown airtag was present.

Sorry, this isn’t an answer. But I’ll tell you one thing it doesn’t surprise me that you haven’t received an answer to your question. And it doesn’t surprise me that the goofball working at the Apple store couldn’t answer the question or didn’t wanna answer the question, I’ve been an Apple person for a long time until recently when my phone got hacked it open my eyes, and I’ve learned some things about Apple better not very well oriented with the direction I thought they would be going. They happen to do some nefarious **** to the people that buy their products i.e. they put hackers on you and i.e. not solving your problems. So you’ll be lucky if you ever get an answer to this question unless somebody outside the Apple elite knows for sure.

FWIW...

I had recently drove a friend to her doctor's appointment. I also have an AirTag attached to my car key's keychain.

We both have iPhones. Both phones have Bluetooth and "Find My Network" enabled on them. However, I had left my iPhone at home. After we got back from our short trip, she had noticed that she got the "An AirTag is Traveling with You" message on her phone. It also showed the exact route that we took.

... so that's my experience with them. It also verified (for me) that my phone, which was paired with this AirTag, did have to be outside paired tag's Bluetooth range for her to get the warning message on her phone.

To directly answer your question: AFAIK, Apple has not released any technical details on how exactly these AirTags function.
