MacBook Air is stuck in "install in progress"

I have been waiting for days for the "install in Progress" to finish so I can go ahead and update the Mac. It says some updates could not be installed because of the in progress status. I tried to quit the install in progress from the pull down on the left hand top side of MacBook Air. Still, the notice comes back up.

Not sure what I am to do? It looks like the install in progress is the 3.0 Macintosh HD.

Option + Command + esc to bring up the force quit panel. Quit what you need to, restart and try again.

If that fails, press and hold the power button until the Mac goes completely BLACK. About ten seconds.

Then restart the process. But what are you trying to install? What are the error messages if any.
