Iphone 11 screen goes black when listening to voice messages or on calls

It's really weird, whenever I try to listen to a voice message on WhatsApp or Telegram, the screen goes black and I can't bring it back unless I "force restart" it with the volume and lock keys. This also happens when I'm on calls and the screen doesn't come back until the other person hangs up.

Does it have to do with my settings or is it a hardware issue?

If your screen doesn't seem to be coming back on after calls, voice messages, etc... you'll first want to ensure that your iPhone is fully up-to-date: Update your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support

If you're already up-to-date, try restarting to see if that improves things at all: Restart your iPhone - Apple Support

After that, test to see if the issue continues.
