Hello!

Sounds like you’ve done a great job troubleshooting so far. You are 14 days to return the device for a refund. If you feel it’s not working properly, might I suggest you do that?

Otherwise, have it checked out at an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP):

Have a great day and good luck. If you want to, let us know how you make out.

Your iPhone has a Proximity Sensor built-in at the top of the iPhone which when it determines something is blocking it, which as you state can be when your iPhone is in your pocket or face down, it will turn the screen off. But when you answer a call it should turn on. If you go to Settings > Display and Brightness > Is Raise to Wake on? Make sure that is on. Good work in already removing your screen protector, ones that aren’t very good quality can affect that sensor, and any other accessories be sure to remove.
