iMovie insert blank screen

I never use iMovie so I'm feeling very ignorant...how can I control the placement of photos at the end of my timeline? I want to add a song and photos but I want to have a length of blank screen before the song/photos begin. Instead, the photos automatically place themselves immediately after the last video image. THere has to be a way...

Add a black bacground to the timeline. Adjust its duration as desired. Place your photos into the timeline after the black background.

Or, you can add the black background to the timeline and insert your photos into the upper timeline above the black background, adjusting them to any position that you want.
