Plugging in a flash drive into my iPad or iPhone

I saw this question asked a few times but I am not clear about the answer.

iPad USB3 adapter power - Apple Community

I purchased a Apple Lightning to USB Camera Adapter to plug a flash drive into my iPad or iPhone, however, when I tried it, it said on the screen it cannot use the accessory because it requires too much power. Do I need to get a USB hub, plug the Lightning to USB Camera Adapter into the iPad or iPhone, then plug the USB-A from the USB hub into the Lightning to USB Camera Adapter, and then use another cable to connect the USB hub to the wall outlet? Would that work?

iPad mini 4, iPadOS 15

The Apple Lightning to USB3 Camera Adapter has a pigtail Lightning connector that must be connected to the host iPad - and has:

a) a USB3 Type-A port to which you can connect your USB storage

b) a pass-through Lightning connector to which you need to connect your Power Adapter (rated 12W or greater) using your iPad’s charging cable.

The Power Adapter supplies power to both the USB storage and the iPad.
