my incoming voicemail messages are suddenly showing up in the messages app as a text with an embedded mp3 file which contains the audio recording. They are not showing up in the phone app at all, not even as a recent call.
Any ideas how to stop this?

Talk to your phone carrier voicemail is their feature.
