Logitech M575 and Messages app incompatibility

I recently switched to using a Logitech M575 via Bluetooth (no USB wireless dongle) with My MB Air M2 running the latest Ventura. It works great for the most part, but for some reason it's wholly incompatible with the Messages app. I cannot select a recipient, cannot right-click on recipients. About all I could do was pin a recipient (although I couldn't even choose them when pinned).

I did tweak a setting via the command line to increase mouse tracking speed, but that shouldn't throw off locating the pointer and reacting to a click in a specific app, but not others. I ended up switching back to my Permice wired trackball.

I googled for this, but there were no results. I don't have a solution as such, but thought to post this so anyone else having this problem might be able to find a thread and discuss their solution (or at least know they're not alone).
