ITunes Match and IOS 9.3.5 - still works?

My iPod does not update beyond this, I think it's gen5. I have an active subscription to Match, in iTunes on my computer all the songs in my library show as "Matched" or "Uploaded" as applicable. I have been able to play the music on the iPod in the past. All my music shows up on the iPod, but greyed out - tapping a song gets an "Item Not Available. This item can't be played." pop up. Some songs that had been previously downloaded are playable. Cannot download any new music. The iPod is connected to the internet - can browse in Safari.

I have restarted the device, signed in and out of Match on the iPod, signed out and in of my Apple account.

I am able to play music in iTunes on a laptop that does not have the music files, so I know that the songs are being played from Match. Everything points to the iPod being the problem.

My renewal comes up in two weeks, if I cannot use the iPod then would be no point in renewing. Can someone please suggest something else I could try, or state that Match no longer works with 9.3.5? Thanks!

I have been trying to troubleshoot a similar issue with my iPad mini also running 9.3.5. I was trying to find some way to get my music library, which lives on my laptop MacBook Air (now...just migrated to that new machine) to use my iTunes Match subscription or Home Sharing or something to allow the iPad mini to play my music as it used to do. Recently, I have found that the only music I could access and actually play on the iPad mini was music purchased from Apple/iTunes. When I accessed any other library of music through the sharing menu in the Music app, I could see the music listed but received a message saying that I was not authorized to access the music.

Finally, after several rounds of visiting the community help listings and asking questions, contacting Apple support, trying all the settings I could think to try on each of my Apple machines, I began to conclude that the problem is running the old software, which on my iPad mini cannot be updated any further. Today, I talked with a support rep who told me they could not provide any advice that would be helpful because of that outdated OS. They suggested I could work with an Apple Store, but what I understood them to really be saying was what I have come to expect: That iTunes Match—and perhaps Home Sharing as well—does not actually work with that old OS any longer.

I'm left realizing that a) I can successfully access my Apple-purchased music on the iPad mini, b) I can always sync some other music to the mini, c) I need to get a newer iPad mini if I want these functionalities, and d) I need to weigh whether even the modest price of iTunes Match is worth paying if playing music on the iPad was my main reason for having it.

Anyway, I wanted to share this in case it may help you come to acceptance of what is and isn't possible with this problem going forward.
