download file on dock

I lost my download file on my dock. I went to finder, found the download file, dragged and dropped it to the dock. Then I wanted to set is as a fan view, but when I right clicked on new download file in the dock, I do not get fan options. Instead a right click only produces two options: Open downloads or Options>. I hoped to find the fan option by clicking Options>, but the only choices I the had were Remove from Deck, Open at Login, or Show in Finder. How can I get the fan view back?
