Mail inbox filter not working

When I tap the filter icon in my inbox, ALL the messages disappear, not just the unread ones. This has gone on for several versions of MacOS.

And ideas how to fix this?

That was the problem! Only iCloud was checked; I have 2 other mail servers, and I was getting all the messages from them. Checked the other 2 boxes and it's working fine!

In the View Menu, Filter, what is enabled for filtering?
