What is the auto timeout for hotspot?

I have my devices connected to iPhone hotspot but don’t want them to be connected FOREVER. I always have to sit and watch the connection draining down by battery because it’s connected for hours on end whereas I only need the devices to be connected when I use them! How do I set a timer for timeout? It’s that simple of an ask!

Create an automation!

  1. Go to “shortcuts” app
  2. click “automations” at the bottom
  3. create a personal automation
  4. “time of day”
  5. set it for whatever time you want the hotspot to turn off for, then daily/weekly/monthly (I always click monthly just so I can see the actual day and be reassured, lol)
  6. then click “add action”
  7. search for “hotspot” and click “set personal hotspot”
  8. toggle “on” to say “off”
  9. click next
  10. turn off “ask before running”
  11. choose whether you want to be notified
  12. click done! :)

Jschl32 steps are very helpful, but slight difference(s) on my iPhone: Right before step #6, I had to click "New Blank Automation," then it switched to show "add action" button. If I tried to do your step 7 before doing that, the search for "hotspot" got no result.

Then when I got to your #9 it only gave me DONE as option, not NEXT. But I could do your steps #10 and #11 after that; I opened the automation I just made and in its properties changed the "ask before running" to off, and slid the when notify slider to my choice.

My hotspot 'timeout' is determined by the amount of data I use. When I reach the data limit, the speed of the hotspot slows down dramatically. I don't know your carrier but mine is Verizon - and their site shows my data limit and usage. I have set up alarms with them so that when my data usage is close to the limit, I get a text warning telling me this.

Since a hot spot can cause the phone to discharge to energy levels lower than recommended by Apple. Why doesn’t Apple have control which allows the user to put the phone to sleep, if energy levels go below 20%. Not just for hot spot, but in general. I don’t expect the carriers which sell phones and plans to provide controls which maximize phone reliability wrt battery utilization.
