How to disconnect one iphone from another?

My son was using my old iphone when I switched to a newer one and both phones were linked because I had the same apple ID. Now, we got him a new iphone and I created an apple ID for him, but the phones are still linked somewhere/somehow. Every time I update either one of the phones, it updates the other one. I keep removing his old & new phone from my list, but it keeps popping back up. Obviously there is something that is keeping them connected, I just can’t figure out what. It’s starting to frustrate me. Help!!

Each Apple device is linked/associated with the Apple ID of the person who did the setup.

In your case, it is your Apple ID.

You have to read -> this Apple article: What to do before you sell, give away, or trade in your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch -> What to do before you sell, give away, or trade in your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support

Then you have to remove the iPhone from your account, see -> Check your Apple ID device list to see where you're signed in -> Check your Apple ID device list to find where you're signed in - Apple Support

Then your son can sign in with his own Apple ID.
