My ipad deleted what I edited on a photo with markup

So I took a picture and edited (on my iPad Air 4th generation, latest software 16.3.1 ) with markup, doing some important notes on them. A few days later, today, I wanted to take a look at them and I could not believe my eyes. The markups have disappeared, leaving me with the original photos with no notes on them. I can't imagine how something like this happened... Any way I can get my markups back? I took some important notes and I need them.

Be very cautious when using this default editing app as it is unreliable. I was literally editing an image with this 'Markup' tool; which took me about 30 mins to edit. And when I pressed done, it said: Error to save... and it gave me the picture as it was before the edits. If you use it, make sure to save regularly or take screenshots of the edits.

For information, your iPad requires update to the most recent version of iPadOS - at time of writing, this being iPadOS 16.4.1.

Is there a way to restore my notes? That’s all I care about tbh… not the update itself👀 also idk why it deleted my markup regardless of the update
