Question marks in boxes in place of text?

How to get rid of "question mark in boxes" showing up where text should be? Example, would be when in the Chrome browser and I'm looking in the developer area for the source code. Any ideas; font conflict, etc?

It is a font conflict. First step, please determine if the same problem occurs in "Safe Mode": How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support. Then, restart your Mac normally (not "Safe Mode") and determine if the problem persists.

Among other tasks, "Safe Mode" resets the Mac's font cache files, but that may or may not be the cause.
