left air pod loses charge quickly becoming useless within 20 minutes

Left air pod has never held a charge so that both can be listened to. We have placed airpods next to phone for firmware update, and that never worked. Contacting customer support was a joke, he said to place airpod next to phone to update firmware. Not helpful.
