What's does Photos Merge function do?

Photos on MacBook Pro Ventura. When I use the search for duplicates function, photos are displayed with different sizes. I know some are raw -vs- jpeg, but some are close in size but slightly different. What exactly will the Merge command do? Does it literally merge the 2 files together, not clear in the docs.

Also, when I synch music on Mac, why does it also want to synch photos. It doesn't make sense.

Thanks

We really have to check the suggested duplicates and not merge them sight unseen.

When I first tested the Duplicates album, there were many duplicates, that I had created intentionally, because I wanted differently edited version of the same photo, either black-and-white or color versions, or differnet croppings to have different compositions of the scene. It is a pity, that we cannot mark the duplicates that we want to keep, so they will not be suggested again.

And some photos were no duplicates at all, but photos with the same filename.

The documentation for the "Merge" feature is a bit vague. (Remove duplicate photos in Photos on Mac – Apple Support (UK))

Apple is only specifying, that "One original photo or video appears where the selected duplicates were located in your library. Deleted duplicates appear in the Recently Deleted album where you can recover or permanently delete them."

You will get a bit more information, when you click the "Merge" button for a pair of duplicates. Photos will tell you, if it considers the pair to be a pair of identical photos or similar photos with slightly differences.

  • For identical items Photos will just keep one of the duplicates, the one with the most relelant metadata.
  • For similar items it will keep the item with the best resolution. It is not documented at all, how the metadata will be merged, if there is a conflict. I am always copying relevant metadata to all items to be merged, to be sure to keep the correct capture date, the keywords, and titles.

Thanks, I thought that me going on, so Merge was maybe not the best choice for the function. I didn't think it would make sense to actually "merge" metadata. So duplicates get flagged, but you really need to look at what is being compared and manually decide.

When I use my DSLR, have it set to automatically save Raw and a jpeg.
