iPhone 14 Pro Max shut down while overnight charging

I woke up to my iPhone 14 Pro max dead despite being on the charger. Replugged in and it didn’t start up. I was able to get it to start after a hard reset and it showed charged to 80%. I had updated to iOS 16.4 when it was released but this was the first time with the problem. Others had reported that their iPhone had shut down with previous iOS versions prior to 16.4 but this was the first time with mine. Looks like iOS 16.4 has a charging glitch that wasn’t resolved in the update. Thoughts?

Same here. I did not experience this issue that others reported in previous versions. However, now that I'm on 16.4.1, I've begun experiencing these same - where I leave it charging overnight only to wake up to find my phone shut off. The pushing of the volume buttons and power button works to turn it back on. This is concerning because I (like many others) use my iPhone as my alarm to wake up in the morning.

Hi MrUpNorth,

Having your iPhone shut off while charging is definitely not expected. Do you find this happening when plugged into power with a Lightning cable and wall adapter? Or, are you using wireless charging?

If you have both options available, try with the other, and see if that still happens.

Yes, this happened when plugged in with lightning cable. Did it several times and then it has been normal for weeks. Now doesn’t give full battery charge. It will charge over night to 92, 98, ,96 but not 100%.

Hi, I recently updated to iOS 16.6 on my iPhone 14.

I experienced the same problem.

The solution I found is : First connect it to the charging cable and then power it off. It wouldn't turn on automatically then.

Therefore, it doesn't depend on either {Raise to wake or Always on top !

My battery life shows 97% remaining. This last week I wake up and it shows charged to 92, 94, or any number less than 100%. This morning it was 92, I did a hard reset and it came back on at 98%.
