Printing problem with MacOS 12.6.4

With a MacBook Pro running MacOS 12.6.4 connecting to a networked Canon 6100 B&W laser printer, when either an email (from the Apple Mail app) or a PDF (from Preview) is sent to the printer, a connection is made and the printer tries to print it, BUT only a few horizontal lines show up on the page. The printer shows up as the default printer in the Printer & Scanner list. This is true even if the preview in the print dialog is complete and accurate. Tried the basic troubleshooting routine from Apple and tried deleting and reinstalling the printer to no avail. Any suggestions or assistance would be most welcome
