Connecting VCR to Macbook Pro

Hi all. I am trying to capture video off VHS tapes, using a VCR connected to my Macbook Pro (13 inch, 2017, Monterey 12.6) via a DigitNow VHS to DVD Video Capture Converter.

It used to run on my 2009 iMac, using the software supplied via CD. As I don't have a disc drive on my Macbook I was hoping to capture video via VLC, iMovie or Quicktime but none of those programs are recognising that there is a capture device connected.

Do I need to download some third party software? I believe the software that came on the original CD was from ArcSoft which has since been discontinued.

Or is the issue that I am trying to connect the converter through a USB to thunderbolt adapter?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Yes, you need to download something to tell the computer that the converter is there and working. I would contact the makers of the device, as they are the ones who will know what to use.
