Cardio Fitness app won't update

Since the latest software updates for Apple Watch 6: v. 9.3.1 (20S664); and iPhone 13 Pro Max: v. 16.3.1; the Cardio Fitness app on the iPhone has stopped updating. It's been nearly a month now. Both devices are using less than 35% of the available memory/storage. The watch hasn't been dropped, submerged or exposed to water. I've done hard resets on both devices, to no avail, and don't have any third-party fitness apps to potentially interfere with Apple Fitness apps. This appears to be an iOS / watch OS software bug. I don't want to have to wipe both devices and do a clean install. Any other options?

I was routinely utilizing my AppleWatch for two years tracking outdoor walks and jogging on the Workout app/feature. Workouts typically 4-5 miles in duration, and it would update Cardio Fitness on my iPhone within 1-2 minutes of completing a workout. For the last three weeks: nothing.

I downloaded the latest iOS and AppleWatch OS updates today. Restarted both devices. Opened Workout on AppleWatch, went for a 2 mile walk @ 3.5 mph. Ended workout. Nothing in Cardio Fitness.

All the other Health categories (i.e. Heart Rate, Flights Climbed, Steps, Walking + Running Distance, Walking Speed, Walking Asymmetry, Workouts) are all tracking and updating correctly. Batteries on both devices seem fine.

I would most appreciate suggestions on how to troubleshoot the issue (as opposed to correcting my nomenclature). Much obliged.

Cardio Fitness is not an app. It is a measurement category in the Health app. It’s information is gathered from the Apple Watch. More information on how it is done is in the article that sberman has posted above for you to review.

Cardio Fitness is measured from outdoor cardio activities (Running, Walking, Cycling etc) ONLY. If you have not done any outdoor cardio activities in a month then there will be no updates even if you did a bunch of indoor activities. Just wanted to confirm this.
