iMac stuck at blue screen

Big problem. So any time i my Mac turn on on, it will start booting as usual but once the blue screen pops up it gets stuck and hangs and occasionally shows a loading animation near the bottom. I tried using verbose mode and once it gets to the blue screen, it shows a blank console and flashes for 1 second the blue screen and back to the console (sometimes showing something about the airport card.) Anyone know why? This Mac (even though it’s old) is the best Mac I have ever had. I’d love to get it back up and running.

Thanks Kwamster, but any time i try, it will show a thick grey loading bar and do the same thing.

Also Something new, I left it on over night and the cursor is able to move but it is still not able to start. I might be able to send a video soon. And lastly I can put it into target disk mode to access the files. (I was the tinkering with the about this mac, so it might be the system version file.)

edit: accidentally hit the best answer thing, sorry and I may be able to reinstall, but might be risky

Hi WolfyBoy104

welcome to the Apple Community.

Re: iMac stuck at blue screen : Anyone know why?

Could be any one of several reasons why ... thank you for describing so well what happens when trying to boot now.

Wondering which iMac model (year) you have,

and

what was happening the last time it was working well, (if anything) and before it was shut down. (Eg: iMac struggling to open an image or app / frozen app had to be force quit / memory / storage space mostly used up / disk errors / downloaded incompatible app etc.)

Apple support have a few trouble-shooting articles online. (We can not tell if they'll address issues for your particular Mac model.)

Have you tried starting up in safe mode? Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support (IE)AppleOfficial Apple Support › en-gb › guide › mac-help

If you're able to do that, completely remove the old app and then restart again.

In general, running older versions of apps can cause all kinds of issues, like if a preference file was overwritten by an older version in your Library. Also, have you seen this thread? xCode, World of Goo and iTunes crash afte… - Apple CommunityAppleOfficial Apple Support Community › thread
