Third party mouse only scrolling in one direction

Hi, I'm on a 2017 macbook pro running on Ventura 13.2.1 and have some issues with my mouse scrolling. Whenever I connect my steelseries rival 3 wireless mouse (both bluetooth and dongle) the scrolling only goes in one direction. When I scroll up, it goes down. When I scroll down, it goes down.

I've had the same problem with different mice (logitech mx master 3) on my computer and I know it isn't the mice hardware because on a friend's, windows, laptop it works fine. For both mice I have updated firmare and downloaded their respective company's software.

Hey there onMonk,

Thanks for reaching out to the Apple Support Communities.

To get started, have you had a chance to check your Mouse settings in the System Settings on your MacBook? If not, check out the information in the following resource to ensure that your mouse settings are set up correctly: Change Mouse settings on Mac - Apple Support

Use Mouse settings to change how your mouse interacts with your Mac. For example, use gestures to scroll long lists and webpages, and use screen zoom to make onscreen images larger.

Note: A wireless mouse must be connected with your Mac to display the settings listed below.

To change these settings, choose Apple menu  > System Settings, then click Mouse  in the sidebar.

If all the settings appear correct, we'd also recommend testing the issue in safe mode. This can help rule out other possible software that may be causing some unexpected issues. For steps on how to boot into safe mode, and what to do if the issue does or doesn't occur in safe mode, check out this link here: How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support

If the issue persists after going through the steps above, you may need to reach out to SteelSeries support for additional help with looking into the mouse settings on their software. Check out this link for help with reaching out to SteelSeries support: Support - SteelSeries

We hope that's able to help.

Take care!

Thanks so much!

For those having similar issues, I started by booting in safemode as specified by the link above. Seeing that the mouse was working normally there I followed the instructions and went into applications folder in finder and deleted any apps that I don't need/ I thought might be interfering. Something I deleted helped and now it works!
