Deleted App Limit Settings Re-appear

I deleted old app limits from my child's screen time. Then I added new ones. The old app limits deleted and the new ones appeared. I confirmed this across all three of my devices (an iPhone, Macbook Pro, and iPad), and across both my child's devices (an iPad and iPhone). It worked for a few hours.

Then all the old app limits reappeared ALONG with the new ones. I tried again. Once again: after a few hours the old app limits reappeared, stacked with new ones.

We are now bogged down in a ridiculous list of app limits (> 25) that are stacked (duplicates even triplicates!). They make it difficult for my child to use his devices. Absolutely heartbreaking and stupid.

All devices are up to date.

We have signed out and back into our icloud accounts on all devices.

I'm at the point where I'm tempted to delete and wipe all the devices or delete my child's apple ID and start fresh withe family sharing: both are horrible last resorts to consider.

Any advice?

Im working on an M1 macbook pro with ventura and on an iphone/ipad using iOS 16. same iOS for my child's iPhone and iPad.

Hi beccaacceb,

Using Screen Time with parental controls is an excellent way to protect and enrich our children, so we understand how inconvenient it must be to have those settings continuously reverting to previous limits.

You’re using multiple devices, all designed to sync with one another, so it’s possible one of your devices is re-syncing the previous settings. A great way to test this theory is to disable “Share Across Devices” on one device and make adjustments to app limits on that device only. If it reverts back to the original settings, it’s a good indication that this you may need to contact Apple Support for more advanced assistance.

If the settings do not revert with that feature disabled, it may be re-syncing from one of the other devices. In this case, let's try this:

  1. Re-enable “Share Across Devices.”
  2. Turn off both you iPhone and iPad and any other devices you may have syncing parental controls for your child’s devices.
  3. Ensure you have a strong internet connection on your MacBook Pro and adjust the app limits here.
  4. Confirm the changes were saved and synced.
  5. Power on each device one at a time and let it sync the changes.

We look forward to learning how it goes.

Take care.
