How to disable Apple News from launching?

This is macOS Ventura.

So I don't ever want to launch an Apple News article. How do I stop Apple News from launching if I accidentally click a link that leads to Apple News? It's invasive and I honestly would rather read the articles from the original source not in yet another app.

There's got to be a way, right?

Don't click on AppleNews articles...

ref: Apple News+ - Apple

Verify your >System Settings>AppleID>iCloud> and AppleNews is NOT checked here

Thanks. This is on Mastodon that I'm experiencing the issue. Honestly we just went through this on iOS to the point where we can now delete useless apps like Stocks if we want to. It's almost hilarious it has now cropped up again on macOS, which should by default be more open to tinkering by end users since it's a full general purpose computer. Hopefully Apple will address it sooner on macOS than the length of time it took to address it on iOS!

At any rate, I have temporarily solved the issues by just filtering all posts containing an Apple News link out of my timeline completely.

I also found out the actual solution to fully deleting a default app for macOS Ventura but it is involved, so I will probably avoid it for the moment.

If the link is from Apple News, the URL will look something like this:

apple.news/A4UiqyCaoQ_SYyqj6s8krwQ

Note that I've deleted the https:// from the beginning of the link so that it doesn't work. The important part is the "apple.news" at the beginning. In most apps and applications, if you hover over the link, you can see the URL. For better or worse, you can't tell from that link what the original source is. That link leads only to Apple News.

Har har har…

Sometimes it's hard to tell they're an Apple News article, which is why I'm trying to figure out how to just force the OS to give me an error message instead of launching the app.

If the App launches use the Command Q to quit the app. — not that difficult.

Very rarely do I get hoodwinked into an AppleNews article launching on me, but I quickly shut it down.
