First, your MacBook Pro runs macOS, not iOS. iOS is for iPhones & iPads.
Open the Mac App Store & hold down the option key while clicking the Purchases tab on your Catalina Mac. If you see Pages, Numbers, and Keynote with Update/Install buttons, it may offer to download a previous version of these applications compatible with Catalina.
In Mojave and later releases of macOS, one must enter ⌘+0 (zero) to get to the previous purchases panel in the Mac App Store. This changed from the option+Purchases tab in High Sierra and earlier.

Hello elisafrombrighton,
There wouldn't be an older version of the Numbers app you could download. You may need to look into alternative options, if you're using Catalina. Or you could look into upgrading your Mac to the latest version, if it supports it: macOS Ventura is compatible with these computers - Apple Support After upgrading to the latest version you should be able to download the Number app from the Mac App Store.
You also mentioned having issues downloading an update for iOS. Have you tried these related steps: If your iPhone or iPad won't update - Apple Support Which should remove the Mac from the situation and you can update directly on the iOS device.
Let us know if this helps out or not. If not, please provide us with your Mac model and year. We'll help from there.
Have a lovely day!
