This does not work on my iPad

i cannot turn off private browsing mode in Safari on my iPad. When I tap the tabs icon at the top of the browser I am only given the option to add another private tab. There is no option to open an ordinary tab

I had read that support page and the suggested procedure is the one I cannot do. When I touch the tabs button I do not get the pull down menu shown. I get an abbreviated pull down menu. There is no "new tab" option. The pull down menu only shows these options: "new private tab" "new private window in split view" "close this tab".

I have closed and reopened Safari and it always opens in private browsing mode.

It will Always open in Private Mode until you reset the Browsing Mode. Private Mode is basically designed for short term browsing not as your main browser setting. You probably need to open Safari. Tap on Select the little book icon in the top left corner. This will split the screen a little about 1/3rd you will see Private Highlighted under the Word SAFARI tap/select Tabs it Should Highlight. Then your back to normal browsing setting.
