disable pdf view in Safari Ventura

When a link to a pdf file is clicked in Safari, I want the file to download, not to be displayed in the browser's window. The terminal command

defaults write com.apple.Safari WebKitOmitPDFSupport -bool YES

used to do this, but in Ventura it does not seem to work.

How do I get files to download directly?

Here are some non-answers:

1) "why do you want to do that?" — because I do.

2) "hold down the option key when clicking" — because I just want to click, not something more complex.

A possible answer might be:

"impossible now, yet another function Apple removed."

Thanks for any remedy that works.

Robert.

Hi VikingOSX,

Thanks and that's what I feared.

Another removed function. Maybe I can get around it with Keyboard Maestro, but probably not as I would have to intercept the click, examine the link etc.

Sigh.

Thanks for a clean straight answer.

Robert.

BTW, I did find a way around another removed function: that of choosing the region settings independently (I want Euros, metric, English, and apostrophe for thousands separation in number format; impossible since Ventura. Signalled it to Apple as a serious bug, because all my files with numbers would have become unusable. No reply of course).

There is no removing the PDF handler in Safari.

If you have an actual PDF file at the end of that link, and you would know this because you have enabled Safari's Show Status bar, then you can also right-click on that link and choose your direct download options (e.g. Download linked file…, Download Linked File as…).

However, if the site is built using a content manager (e.g. Drupal, etc.) then the link may not end in a .pdf, but rather a link name for a file identifier in a internal site repository. It may only open in your browser, and not offer a solution as in the first paragraph.
