Turn off voice control for apple earpods (wired headphones)?

How do i disable voice control from activating when pressing and holding the middle button on the Apple earpods? There seems to be no setting for deactivating voice control from headphones. The issue seems to be the same that many others have with wireless headphones.

I do not want to use voice control ever, and have hence deactivated it from all the settings I have managed to find. The side button on the phone is not an issue, that one is deactivated.

The issue should be easilly testable. Just plug in the apple earpods to your iphone, press and hold the middle button on the headphones, and voice control activates.

Please let me know if there is a setting to deactivate this, or confirm that there is no way to deactivate. This is very frustrating as this causes me to randomly call people in my address book.

Hello Johannes32,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities.

We understand that you want to turn off Voice Control. We are happy to help.

These steps may help. Please try the steps here: Turn off Classic Voice Control on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

"On an iPhone X or later, you can prevent Classic Voice Control or Siri from responding when you press and hold the Side button on your device. On an iPhone 8 or earlier, you can prevent Classic Voice Control or Siri from responding when you press and hold the Home button on your device.

Follow these steps:

  1. On an iPhone X or later, go to Settings > Accessibility, then tap Side Button. On an iPhone 8 or earlier, go to Settings > Accessibility, then tap Home Button.
  2. Under Press and Hold to Speak, select one of these options:
    • Siri: Siri will respond when you press and hold the Home button.
    • Classic Voice Control: Classic Voice Control will respond when you press and hold the Home button. This will also turn off Siri.
    • Off: There will be no response when you press and hold the Home button.

The press and hold setting applies only to the Side or Home button. If you're using a headset, and it unexpectedly activates Siri or Classic Voice Control, make sure that your headset is fully inserted into the device.

If you have a loose or poor headset connection, frayed cables, or moisture on the connector or remote, it might unexpectedly activate Siri or Classic Voice Control. If the issue persists, try using a different headset."

Let us know if you have further questions.

Take care.

Thank you but did not really solve the issue. The press and hold side button setting is already off.

However this part is not really clear.

”If you have a loose or poor headset connection, frayed cables, or moisture on the connector or remote, it might unexpectedly activate Siri or Classic Voice Control. If the issue persists, try using a different headset.”

The headset connection is not poor. Earpods are plugged into the lightning plug (no dirt or moist or nothing in between).

Also the activation of voice control is not unexpected. It activates by pressing and holding the middle button on the apple earpods. This happens when the buttons on the headphones gets pressed by mistake. The problem is that there does not seem to be any setting available to disable voice control activation from the headphones. Can you confirmthat there is no setting for this? Is there some way to report it to Apple so we could get a fix for the issue?

Hi Johannes32,

You are correct that there is not a setting to disable the functionality of that button, but you can always send your suggestion to Apple with this link: Product Feedback - Apple

Based on the text you mentioned above, it is possible that wear, damage or moisture could be causing Voice Control to activate. If you want to look into options further, we recommend contacting Apple: Apple Support
