Why does an app need to "Restore Purchases"?


I recently launched an app on my iPad and none of the 'full version' features that I purchased worked. I contacted the developer and they said to click on the 'Restore Purchases' link. I did, and the full version features were available again. I asked them why I needed to do that and they said to ask Apple, that it's something Apple causes.

To clarify, this is not a new device. This has nothing to do with ads or ad free.


This is a device that has run the in-app paid pro version of the app in the past, and then suddenly it was not the pro version. The vendor said to Restore Purchases, which I did, and the pro version is working again.


My question was: why does that happen? Why does a working pro version of an app suddenly revert to the non-pro version? The developer said to ask Apple.

Hey JIM140,


There are certain in-app purchases such as removing adds that you purchase one time, and they can transfer to other devices that are associated with the same Apple ID.


If you're signing into a new device or having issues with in-app purchases, you can use the option to restore them so that you do not have to purchase them again. For more information about this, check out this article: If you can't find or use your in-app purchases.

We can't tell at this point why it did happen in your case, but reasons it could happen include an update to the app version, an update to the system version, a data restore from backup, the lapse of time since the purchase of the pro version, or a random corruption of an application settings file possibly due to a bug in the application. Some apps just seem to need purchase restoration from time to time.
