APPLE PENCIL 2 WON’T CONNECT FOLLOWING IOS 16.3.1 UPDATE

My Apple Pencil 2 will not connect since iOS/iPadOS 16.3.1 update. I tried everything. Reset my network settings, reset my iPad by powering on/off in every way possible, toggling Bluetooth, and forgetting my Apple Pencil from Bluetooth.

The Pencil shows up when connecting to magnetic strip on the side of my iPad, but it just displays “Apple Pencil” at the top of my screen indefinitely, it does not end up connecting.

PLEASE HELP I NEED MY DEVICE WORKING I HAVE SO MUCH HOMEWORK TO COMPLETE.

I experienced the similar issues, and my iPad doesn’t even acknowledge the existence of the Apple Pencil 2 any longer after removing it as a Bluetooth device.

I’ve even done network, hard, soft, and at least 2 factory resets. I was optimistic that 16.4 would resolve this defect, but it did not. I even tried my daughter’s Apple Pencil 2 without success (even though my Apple Pencil 2 worked fine on her iPad).

Please help, Apple!! I sorely miss my Apple Pencil!

Hello DeanMacSha,

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities. We see you have some questions about your Apple Pencil not working as expected, and we'd like to help. The following link can go over some steps, and tips, on how to connect your Apple Pencil: Pair Apple Pencil with your iPad

Before you begin
•Make sure that you have the Apple Pencil model that works with your iPad.
•If you're pairing Apple Pencil with iPad (10th generation), make sure that you have the required USB-C to Apple Pencil Adapter and a compatible cable, such as the USB-C Charge Cable.
•You might need to charge your Apple Pencil before you can use it.

From the sounds of it, you're able to connect but the functions of the Apple Pencil aren't working. If the article doesn't help, let us know the following:

  • Does this occur with all apps, or particular ones?
  • Have you tested to see if the same behavior occurs when using a different Apple Pencil tip?

Regards.

After ANY iOS/iPadOS upgrade/update, you should ALWAYS perform a simple hard reset/forced restart of your Apple mobile device.

For iPad models with a Home button, do a simple hard reset/forced restart of your iPad by holding down both the Home and sleep/wake/power button simultaneously until your iPad goes to black and restarts with Apple logo, then release the buttons.

OR

For much newer design iPad models, without a Home button, try the new simple hard reset/forced restart procedure for the new 2018-2022 iPad Pros, 2020/21 iPad Air 4 and 5, the 2021 iPad Mini 6 and the new 2022, 10th gen base models,

1. Press and release the volume button closest to the top Power button

2. Then immediately press and release the volume button farthest from the top Power button.

3. Then, press and hold the top single sleep/wake/power button You will see the Slide to Power off button, but keep on holding down the power button until you see the Apple logo, then let it go.

Once you have performed all the steps, wait for a few seconds and your 2018-2022 iPad will boot up completely to the iPad’s Lock screen.

Best of Luck to You!

Thank you so much for the reply. I think the new update made my iPad believe the pencil was at 0% even though it was at 100%. I bought a new pencil and it works fine, but until today I have no idea if it is a malfunctioning pencil or a firmware problem. I would assume it is a bad pencil because it only works 20% of the time whereas the new one works 100% of the time so far.

I have strong reason to believe it is a software bug which causes the iPad to believe the Apple Pencil is charged when it is not. Now apple pencil's sensitive batteries actually go caput if you leave them uncharged for too long. What is likely happening is that it is sitting on very low charge for extended periods of time (most of the time 0%), then they die. This is 100% speculation, however each time it occurs, plug your pencil into a friend's iPad, it'll be around 2-10% even though it might appear sporadically on your iPad as 100% (which is because it intermittently charges for a few seconds here and there, so sometimes it is around 2-10%). If you can, charge it using a friends iPad to confirm this bug theory please. I unfortunately could not play Apple Pencil roulette and wait until this was patched and bought a new one. I don't understand the glitch because a new pencil works... which contradicts the Apple Pencil bug hypothesis, the old one only works in my mom's iPad. So idk...

Hi DeanMacSha,

We're happy to hear that you were able to get this resolved so you could complete your homework!

Remember to check with Apple about warranty coverage if your Apple Pencil was purchased within the year or was covered under an Apple Care + plan for your iPad:

Legal - Accessory Warranty English - Apple

AppleCare Products - iPad - Apple

You can check your coverage here: Check Your Service and Support Coverage - Apple Support

If you have any other questions about service for your first Apple Pencil, contact Apple Support.

Take care!

I appreciate your reply! I never heard or received a notification from apple that I need to hard reset any device after updating it. But indeed I tried that, it did not work :(

I think the issue is due to screen static. In the winter, the lack of air humidity causes static build-up on the screen of the iPad, (which is exacerbated by coarse, "paper like" screen protectors). This is a huge design flaw, but I learned to just keep a finger on the metal body of the iPad as I write in-order to discharge the screen. Similar to how it is recommended to place a hand on a vehicle before opening the gas cap to fuel, so that you do not accidentally set the car ablaze gd forbid.
