You have to go into your Gmail account via a browser and hide folders you don't want appearing in an email client. Once in your account, click the gear at the top left and choose See all settings.
Click the Labels tab.
For any folders you don't to appear in an email client, click both the hide button, and uncheck Show in IMAP.

? I do not use gmail, and I do not recognize your "IMPORTANT"
Typically Control click on the mailbox...
Spin the hidden carrot if you move your mouse pointer to the right side to reveal or hide...
This may also be an issue. If I remember correctly when I set up my more recent Gmail accounts, you actually have to tell the server end what email protocol you want it to use.
Go into your Gmail account via any browser. As above, click the gear to get to all settings. Under the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab, click the Enable IMAP radio button. Then click Save Changes at the bottom.

My screenshot contradicts this assertion. “Important” shows one unread message. “Inbox” does not.
Admittedly my screenshot is from an iPhone, not a Mac. But that doesn’t matter here.
Thank you for taking the time to send you clear suggestion. Regrettably, it did not produce the desired results as I poked around in everything looking for a place to "show in IMAP" and couldn't find that.
As noted above, it's under the Labels tab in your Gmail settings page:
You're welcome!
The wife and I somewhat recently started new Gmail accounts as our older, small business emails will going away somewhat soon. It took a couple of days to figure out how to get those extra folders to disappear. 🙂
Be very careful. “Inbox” is a mailbox. “Important” is a folder.
These are fundamental aspects of Google’s gmail organization and architecture. Do not pursue this deletion.
Sorry this isn't the answer either.
You have to close Mail down and relaunch it so it can re-list what is, or isn't visible.
Thank goodness you took your valuable time to help me out. This was a tiny problem in life, but like a joint ache it wanted taken care of. You helped me! Thank you Kurt!
