FCPX relinked to wrong file, won't let me relink to correct one

So my sony A7III camera names files the same way after the card is formatted. I worked on a big six-day shoot project and ran out of space, so I moved it to an external SSD. When I batch relinked the files from the library, Final Cut somehow mistakenly relinked a big part of the clips from Day 2 to clips from Day 5 (to give an example - Shot 0005 from Day 2 got relinked to shot 0005 from Day 5), causing over 30 different events and projects to get screwed up and linked with the wrong shots.

I realized this is the problem and tried relinking the right files, but it does not allow me to, as the clips are shorter than the ones that it's wrongly relinked to now. I am now looking for a solution but can't seem to find any...

I'm in big need of help as I don't want to have to redo all the projects by hand :(

Another thing I'm finding right now. When I attempt to relink it to the original file, is it tries to relink every file in the library named 0005, so the error it gives me is that "shot 0005 cannot be relinked because in project ""whatever"" the clip is not wrong enough. Although in project "whatever" I've used another 0005, not the one I'm currently trying to relink......

Sorry about the problem. In general, each filename should be globally unique. That means unique across the project and across all projects you ever do. This is especially a problem with Sony mirrorless cameras which restart filenames with C0001.mp4 each time a card is inserted.

If the particular camera permits, set it to not restart filenames on new cards, and apply a filename prefix unique to that camera.

You can achieve unique filenames by appending a numeric incrementing suffix to each file before import, then upon the next import start with +1 from the last number. The Mac Finder can do this, see available tutorials on Finder rename procedures.

If you ensure unique filenames it will make both post production and archival file management smoother. It will also prevent various anomalous cases like you are now experiencing.

The Sony mirrorless cameras put the media files in a folder tree which can complicate renaming, or importing using "leave files in place". One solution is rewrapping them with a product such as EditReady, or you can remove the MP4 files from the folder tree, rename them and import in place. In general it's not considered good practice to remove files from a media folder tree since in theory the sidecar files might have important metadata. However I have done that on thousands of files from Sony A7-series cameras and never had a problem in FCP.
