Superdrive (model A1379) CD/DVD drive not working with MacBook Air

My model A1379 Superdrive works with my MacBook Pro but does not work with my newly purchased MacBook Air. Two hours with Apple Support could not resolve the problem. I'm sure I'm not the only one with this issue.

Thanks for your reply!

As the administrator and as a new administrator user, "Disc burning" states "No disc burning device was found", however "USB" lists "Apple USB Superdrive". At this point the Superdrive is connected directly to the USB C port on the computer (using a USB 2.0 to USB C adapter cable).

It seems that the MBA recognizes that the Superdrive is connected but just doesn't know how to converse with it.

By the way, I did try an ac power adapter that provides up to 75 W output just in case the Superdrive was not getting enough power but this didn't solve the problem. The Superdrive only needs 8 Watts so this should not have been an issue.

Troubleshooting Superdrives:

Some thoughts:

A. Macs with Media Drives:

If the Mac has a builtin media drive, then a Superdrive will just not work.

B. Is there a Superdrive even seen?:

To Find Out:

  1. Go to: Apple menu
  2. Select: About this Mac
  3. Click: System Report... button
  4. View: Hardware on left-column
  5. Click: Disc Burning
  6. Confirm if a Superdrive is Even Seen

C. Try Using a New Administrator User:

See what happens when you create a new Administrator User and login to it and perform this. If it works, then it is something misconfigured in your current user.

D. Connect to a Different Computer:

Connect this to a difference computer, seeing if you can get it out.

You are welcome.

Some thoughts:

A. Macs with Media Drives:

Does your Mac already have a media drive built into it? If so, it’s just not going to work.

B. Reinstall the macOS:

So, from here, I’d say reinstall the macOS to fix any bugs. Nothing would be lost. It's just that misplaced items would be placed back to where they should be and corrupt system files would be replaced by clean files. Go Here: Reinstall macOS - Apple Support. Use the third bulleted method: [command + r].  Important: Prior to installing an update or performing a reinstallation, to prevent data loss, be sure to back up your Mac with Time Machine.
