Printing presets on pages

My company recently got a new iMac. We had an iMac before, but it was about 10 years old.

On the old iMac we had no problems printing, and setting up printing presets (specifically through Pages). But for some reason those presets and setting up new presets aren’t working correctly on the new iMac.

So here’s the 2 problems I’m having with printing (from Pages, on iMac).

I want to print 2 A4 pages onto an A3 piece of paper.

On the old iMac, I set this up as a printing preset. I set number of pages per paper as 2, then set the printer page size to A3. And then I saved that as a preset.

So then any document I wanted in this format, all I had to do was select the preset. Simple.

But the new iMac is having 2 problems.

The first is when I set up the settings as above, and save the presets, the next time I select that preset, it defaults to A4, even though I saved the preset to A3. (Note, I’ve already changed the printer settings in the iMac settings to default to A3, but that doesn’t affect it for some reason).

It doesn’t matter how many times I save the A3 setting preset, it just doesn’t do it when I select. Everything else changes to the preset settings, except the page size (I think it’s under paper handling, scale to fit, A3).

The second problem is that, even if I do it manually, and select A3, when it prints, it prints on A3, but it shrinks each A4 by about 30-40%, so they aren’t filling up the whole page. I can’t see any option to change this anywhere in the Pages print options, so why on earth is this happening and how do I stop it?

Please help me because this is driving me crazy.

All apple support stuff seems to imply that page size will be saved by presets but it doesn’t seem to be the case for me. What gives?

Hi KCLenny,

To help see if the issue is system-wide with your Mac, see if the behavior persists with a different macOS user account. To do so, check out those steps here:

Add a user or group on Mac - Apple Support

Add a user
1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > System Settings, then click Users & Groups  in the sidebar. (You may need to scroll down.)
2. Click the Add Account button below the list of users on the right (you may be asked to enter your password.)
3. Click the New Account pop-up menu, then choose a type of user.
For more information about the options for each type of user, click the Help button in the lower-left corner of the dialog.
4. Enter a full name for the new user. An account name is generated automatically. To use a different account name, enter it now—you can’t change it later.
5. Enter a password for the user, then enter it again to verify. Enter a password hint to help the user remember their password.
6. Click Create User.

If the issue continues, then reach out to Apple Support directly to help investigate the behavior. You can use the following link to reach out: Contact - Official Apple Support

Kind regards.

We are having the same issue on 3 Macs since the operating system update. No preset will work. It does seem to hold the paper type but the tray information will not populate when changing preset. I have been on to Apple today and the problem has been escalated to higher technicians.

We tried another user, booting in safe mode, deleting printers and starting again. Really annoying as this loses all presets. I have 6 presets for 2 different printers.

Hope they will come back with an answer soon.
