How to remove forward and back arrows on PDF icons in Finder

During some recent upgrade, maybe to Ventura, I noticed all PDF icons in Finder have forward and back arrows on them. This doesn't leave much room for grabbing the icon to move it. The icon is too small to see the pages in the PDF anyway, so I just want those arrows gone. There should be a setting somewhere but I can't find it. I've seen advice saying to right-click a PDF icon and select Properties or View Options, but neither of those choices are there when I do that.

I didn't want to make them smaller but thought I'd try that anyway to see if it worked. I Control-clicked on the Finder desktop and toggled off the "Show icon preview" option, and like magic the arrows went away. So simple -- and so non-obvious.
