HomeKit Secure Video

Has there been a recent update that prevents users from taking screenshots of their security camera feed? When I try to take screenshots the images now appear as a black screen. I don't understand why Apple would do this when I own the camera and it isn't exactly like it's DMCA content or anything?

Greetings Eadavies,

There isn’t anything in any update that we can find which would block your ability to take a screenshot of your security camera feed. Let’s make sure everything has been updated though:

Update HomePod - Apple Support

Update your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support (include iPad if used as your home hub)

Update your Apple TV - Apple Support (if used as your home hub)

Also, make sure your security camera also doesn’t require updating as well.

Once everything has been updated, see if you’re able to take a screenshot of the security feed.

Please let us know the results when you're able.

All the best.

Hi SnickZ,

Thanks for getting in touch about this issue.

I can confirm that all software / firmware is up to date. Just so you’ve got more information, I am using an iPhone X on iOS 16.3, a HomePod mini on 16.3, and 3 Logitech Circle View HomeKit cameras on latest firmware (apparently they auto update every night if an update is available).

I have found the issue of not being able to screenshot the camera feed is only on a live feed, or when I’ve opened all the cameras in HomeKit by tapping the security button. However I am able to screenshot recorded videos. Just not live feed.

In all screenshots the live feel turns black, similar to if I were taking screenshots of the Netflix app for example, where I’m unable to because it is copyright protected (I believe).

Thanks again

Hiya!

Here's an odd twist. My son can take screen shots of our HomeKit on his phone and it's not black, but I can not on my iPhone 13 (iOS 16.3) or my iPad Pro (16.3). That would mean that it's not my network, HomeKit set up, my HomePods or accessories. The issue is within the user's iPhone/iPad.

Eadavies or Brittany1416 if you find an update, I would be so grateful to hear of a solution!

Hi natmac,

I didn’t bother getting in contact with Apple support over the phone as it’s usually a waste of time, where I will just get told the usual “turn it off and turn it on” “sign out and sign in”.

however, a week or so ago, I noticed I am suddenly able to take screenshots of my camera’s video feed again. Checking this morning for you, I am now on iOS 16.3.1. So perhaps there was in fact an issue with 16.3.

Maybe you can update today, try taking a screenshot and let me know how you go!

How annoying that you still have the issue!

Not sure what your setup is like, but I’m using a HomePod Mini as my home hub, and it’s running 16.3.2. And using Logitech Circle View cameras. They’re on firmware 8.2.64.

If your setup is the same, maybe these software versions hold the key to let us take screenshots.

I hope it sorts itself out for you soon. It’s very frustrating not having control over the products you paid for
