Pop up ads in backgammon game

Years ago I selected a backgammon game for my iPhone 7. There were some pop ups and I paid a couple bucks to go ad free. The original game folks let the app go to someone else. Now I start a game and am interrupted by ads that take over the screen for minutes at a time after play has started. I went into settings and hit ad free. It said I’d already paid; did I want ad free. I hit yes. 2 minutes later another ad pop up interrupted play. Any way to fix this?
